Library Assistant

Reports to, and receives assistance, from: Co-principals Head Librarian

Essential Responsibilities Include:

Library Management & Operations:

Organize and maintain library resources including books, periodicals, journals, e-books, and digital media.

Ensure proper cataloguing, classification, and storage of all materials.

Maintain accurate records of library circulation, acquisitions, and usage statistics.

Manage lending and return of resources according to library policies.

Maintain a clean, welcoming, quiet and safe library environment.

Academic Support:

Assist teachers and students in identifying appropriate resources for curriculum and projects.

Collaborate with teachers to integrate library resources into lesson plans.

Support research activities, including guiding students on referencing, citation, and information literacy.

Conduct library orientation sessions for students and staff.

Digital & Technology Management:

Maintain library management software (e.g., KOHA) and digital catalogues.

Facilitate access to online databases, e-books, and other digital resources.

Support teachers and students in using digital resources effectively.

Promotion of Reading & Literacy:

Organize and conduct reading programs, book clubs, and storytelling sessions.

Encourage students to develop good reading habits and critical thinking skills.

Celebrate literary events, National Library Week, and other educational initiatives.

Procurement & Vendor Management:

Coordinate with vendors for the purchase of books, journals, and library equipment.

Review and recommend new acquisitions based on curriculum requirements and student needs.

Monitor budget allocation for library resources and prepare reports as required.

Professional Development & Reporting:

Stay updated on best practices in school librarianship, educational technology, and curriculum trends.

Attend relevant workshops, seminars, and professional development programs.

Prepare monthly/quarterly reports on library usage, acquisitions, and activities.

Qualifications & Experience::

Good language skills and a genuine love for books and reading

Minimum 1–2 years of experience in library management; experience in a school environment is preferred but not mandatory.

Familiarity with library management software (e.g., KOHA) is an advantage.
